Two Years Kinda Sucks

Manson family killer denied parole in California

Fri Aug 31, 2007 9:02AM EDT

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - A former follower of serial killer Charles Manson has been denied parole for the 18th time for the 1969 slayings of Los Angeles couple Leno and Rosemary LaBianca, officials said on Thursday.

Leslie Van Houten, 58, was told to try again in two years, following a parole board panel meeting at the California Institute for Women in Corona, Calif., 37 miles east of Los Angeles. She was last turned down in 2006.

The former high school cheerleader was convicted of murder and conspiracy for participating with Charles "Tex" Watson and Patricia Krenwinkel in the slayings of the LaBiancas in the couple's suburban Los Angeles home. She was 19 at the time of the murders.

Van Houten and fellow members of the so-called Manson "family" were sentenced to death in 1971, but the penalties were commuted to life imprisonment with the possibility of parole the following year, after the California State Supreme Court voted to abolish the death penalty.

Van Houten said at her 2004 parole hearing that she stabbed Rosemary LaBianca 14 to 16 times after the woman had already been stabbed by Watson and Krenwinkel. She did not participate in the Manson family's slayings of pregnant actress Sharon Tate and four others the night before.

Manson, 72, was denied parole for another five years in May.

Aftermath

What was the result of our countdown?

Grief beyond imagining.

That's the gorgeous Patti with Mom in the photo.

(fyi, this photo and two others like it were removed by ebay overnight. I wonder if Debra falsely asserted some claim. Hey, Debra, here's the photo.)

August 10- Our Countdown Finishes

Because this night is much much easier to get a handle on, the Col feels that the good students will focus on this night and figure out what the hell was going on here. If we can do that, there is a chance to link everything together. I hope.

Our Cast

Leno Labianca- Grocer, alleged mafioso, neighbor of Harold True, owned a little black book, maybe killed because of his money or because of owing money. Brutal death. But was he the target?

Rosemary LaBianca- we hear about Leno's first wife (boy do we ever) but never Rosemary's first husband. Is that significant? Killed by Katie and Leslie, quite horribly in her own home. She left a large estate. Is that the motive?

Suzan Struthers- bitch "forgave" the psycho who killed her mom and step dad, Christian Tex. Is this because she wanted them dead? She ran with biker Joe Dornan. Connection? How about brother Frank- Col never hears what happened to him.

Linda Kasabian- this is why I am so stressed out that the bitch didn't get the same sentencing. The very next night, hell, not even 24 hours later, Linda DROVE the car KNOWING THAT MURDERS WERE GONNA LIKELY HAPPEN. How do you walk away scott free from that shit? She never ever calls anyone. Never drops a dime till the case is blown wide open. Fuck her. Worse, she knows Harold True it seems quite well. What is that shit. Then she saves the guy in Venice- uh huh.

Patricia Krenwinkel- craziest bitch that ever walked the planet. She had already proven that she could kill for fun. She fucking loved it. Tex could count on Miss Low Self Esteem.

Leslie Van Houten- for a change I am not going to goad that Jimmy guy, at least not on purpose. I don't think she clearly knows what is gonna happen. I think she's caught up in a weird daydream about freeing Bobby. I think she has low self esteem, yes. I think she has issues and is probably a very angry chick. I think it could have just as easily been Sadie, with Leslie getting the free ride to Venice. I think someone felt that Bobby's girl needed to get her hands dirty just to protect themselves in some weird way, maybe against testimony. Maybe Charlie, I am not sure. But once inside, definitely Tex makes her get her hands dirty. Now of course, I think she liked it. That is a lot of stab wounds. Either way, that half hour constituted throwing her whole life away.

Tex Watson- If we can ever find the connection between Tex and Leno or Tex and Voytek or Leno and Voytek with maybe Crowe somewhere in the middle, we solve this whole mysterious case. The Col believes Tex is the key to everything. He either was killing on orders, which I don't buy, from Charlie, or he was killing for other reasons. Personal ones. Why Tex? We want to know.

Charlie Manson- I don't think he even believed Tate was gonna happen. I think he thought Voytek might get whupped and Abigail dropped in the pool if she was there. The other three were not expected to be there. That is a LOT of unexpected carnage. The next night, knows that Tex is gonna kill again ( work with me here, it fits the facts ) Charlie comes along to make sure that A- there isn't a bunch of unexpected people around B- there isn't a lot of yelling and screaming. And again, I don't know, but maybe he isn't expecting killing. I mean who in the whole group expected Texas Boy to be a secret homicidal maniac? Whatever happens, Charlie is fucking miles away when the LaBiancas are slaughtered.

---> There is a lot to think about. One day the missing link will be found. NINE people remain dead, of which, at most TWO had reasons to be killed. Funnily enough, MOST of the killers, convicted and not, remain alive. Food for thought.

[Many readers write in that I screwed up the White Rambler which was actually Steven's. Yes. I did. Sorry. The killers used Swartz' yellow 1959 Ford. Somebody else pointed up that I played a little fast and loose with the dates when shit happened at 12 in the morning. Probably. Don't care. In any case, 38 years of Bugliosi lies is a long time.]

I am the Devil and I've Come to do the Devil's Business.

I promise I won't tell I saw you.

Don't hit her like that!

Jesus Christ man, can't you see she's pregnant?

You two- in the middle. Where's your cash?

Sadie, please, make it stop!

Ow! My hand!

Listen for sounds.

Hi.

You have to have a lot of love in your heart to do this for people.

Someone's coming.

PLEASE I just want to have my baby.

I'm already dead...

Look, Bitch I don't have any mercy for you.

No! No! NO!

And then I took the bloody towel and with the towel I wrote PIG on the door.

There are no words. It was beyond words.

August 8- Time Runs Out

While Jay does an expensive onset visit with George Peppard, D-Day has arrived.

38 years ago today.... and tonight...

Charlie and Stephanie return to Spahn. Many girls apparently express jealousy over Charlie's exclusivity.

Charlie learns that Bobby has been arrested. May lead cops to ranch. Girls talking about copycats.

Mary and Sandy fuck up at the Sears Roebuck and are arrested. News filters back to the ranch.

Based on NOTHING, the Col believes that Charlie tried to reach Melcher about some outstanding business today and got full on ignored.

If you believe Linda, Charlie told a group of them "Now is the time for Helter Skelter". But then this bitch was just trying to save her own ass.

Steven Parent calls Garrettson and arranges to come by, allegedly to sell an alarm clock, but more likely for a gay rendezvous. Bill obliges.

Sharon, Gibby, Jay and Voytek had their last meal at El Coyote in the back corner booth by the bathrooms. The place was much newer and nicer back then.

They got back to Cielo after 8. Drunk and loud.

Sometime after ten, Tex, Sadie, and Katie, with Linda driving, get into Jonny Swartz's white Rambler.

It was on!

August 7- Still No Indication of Future Slaughter

Well let's see- Charlie is in San Diego with Stephanie the new girl.

Bobby's been arrested but Charlie doesn't know it until tomorrow.

The chuckleheads in this picture start theorizing that maybe copycat murders with blood on the wall would prove that Bobby didn't do Hinman. Of course if it was all about copycats, they turned out to be the WORST EVER since no one linked anything together.

The ranch is still a bit commando- Lotsapoppa assumed dead, Hinman dead, Bobby in jail.

Garretson is taking care of the back house by getting stoned.

Steve Parent is so far away that being murdered at a movie star house isn't even a thought within a thought.

Life is so strange- at any point in the next day all this shit could be avoided if one thing broke the other way.

August 6- Party Or No Party

First off thanks to WestsideWalks for the Picture location.

We can use today to discuss two things.

Sharon is back at the dream house, fully ready to pop out Baby Paul. It is so freaking hot she spends most of the time in her underwear. Oh, and besides her friend Abigail's BF Voytek being around, Sharon's ex BF, the guy who never stopped loving her, Jay Sebring is hanging about. If you look at the famous roll of photos that AesNihil sells, which Bill Nelson stole from the cop who stole them from the Tate house (phew!), little Jay is hanging around in tight speedos. Now I know this was the sixties and people are liberated and shit, but really. Her EX BOYFRIEND is hanging around the house while her husband is in Europe. Fact is, Polanski is a cinema genius. One for the ages. He was also at that time (he appears to have gotten better) a shithead husband. I believe Roman was out, within weeks of becoming a dad. I don't know if Jay had a shot, but he wanted one that is obvious. Do I think they were up to shit? No. But it was only a matter of time. Time that, in three days, they would never get.

Let's also discuss the "parties" that were going on up there. I have personally met over FIVE people who really believe they were invited to a party up at Cielo the night of the slaughter. This is simple. NO they weren't. Anyone who tells you they were (including George Lazenby) are lying and have been lying for decades. Just nod your head and ignore them.

Anyway, two other major events today.

Charlie returned from Big Sur to Spahn with Stephanie. Charlie finds out that Bobby is staying at the Ranch with most of Hinman's property still on him....so he tells him to get out.

Also sometime early today Bobby Beausoleil, sleeping in the Fiat that belonged to Gary, is arrested for murder. He's still in jail for that 38 years later. But it is his arrest that clearly drives the next three days of madness.

August 5- Esalen

38 Years ago today Charlie was NOT at the Ranch depicted below. (Great Photo) He was at Esalen Institute up in Big Sur. What is that?

The never accurate Wikipedia says :

Esalen Institute is a center in the United States for humanistic alternative education and a nonprofit organization devoted to multidisciplinary studies ordinarily neglected by traditional academia. Esalen offers more than 500 public workshops a year in addition to invitational conferences, residential work-study programs, research initiatives, and internships. Part think-tank for the emerging world culture, part college and lab for transformative practices, and part restorative retreat, Esalen is dedicated to exploring work in the humanities and sciences that furthers the full realization of what Aldous Huxley called the “human potential”.

Charlie was touring about with a large chested wench named Stephanie Schram. They'd actually get ticketed at one point for making love. All reports indicate that Charlie thought Stephanie was really something special.

When he does get back to the ranch, tomorrow time, things are not going too well.

August 4- Not a Care in the World

Sharon is at home, dealing with being pregnant.

Rudi is away.

Garrettson is caretaking and toking.

Steve is just a student looking for cute boys.

Voytek dreams of making it like Roman did.

Abigail bleeds for oppressed minorities, and some better weed.

Jay has a head or two to take care of.

Rosemary and Leno are away on vacation.

Roman is prepping THE DAY OF THE DOLPHIN.

The Sixties are in full swing.

Everything is groovy, 38 years ago.

August 3- Meanwhile, Back at the Ranch

Of course, 38 years ago today shit back at Spahn's was crazy time. I mean Lotsapoppa was shot, presumed dead, Gary was dead and had been found. Cops were looking for the culprits. Bobby and Sadie and Mary were nervous- they knew what they had done. And Charlie. Charlie's homemade family was coming undone at the seams. It was chaos.

In just a few days Charlie is going to suggest Bobby take Hinman's Fiat and git. And NOTHING good is gonna come from that.

August 2- Sharon Lives Her Life

38 years ago today Sharon was alive and beautiful. Here's a photo that proves both. If you bother to read the description (which I am not gonna chop off just this once) the loser murdering girls are described as homeless! This before there was a homeless "problem". And Tex, the main thug killer magically gets evaporated from the equation.

Sharon was younger than all of you were. She was beautiful and successful and wanted to be a mom.

Then the assholes cam a knockin, in less than a week now.

August 1- It Begins....

Seriously, how much do you love the Col? I stole this freaking photo off of ebay with such quality you could print it yourself and not have to pay a shitload of money. I am not sure what these people are paying so much for anyway- buying the photo does not give you the copyright, so you can't USE the photo except for your bedroom wall. And that's too sick even for the Col.

Anyway, it is August 1. 38 years ago Gary Hinman was dead and the beginning of the end had started. In eight nights Sharon Tate would be so hideously murdered for no reason by a bunch of losers even I can't think too much about it.

But this is a more pleasant sight. Here is a brilliant photo. It seems to be an army issue photo of the Tate Family in happier times. The Col Paul, looking quite regal. Sharon, the apple of Dad's eye. Doris, thin, young, happy. Debra, before she grew up to Jabba size and hoarded her father's ashes.

Yes, in any other context the photo is a trite look at the American Family in 1956. But what it really is is a photo of happiness, thirteen years before some jerkoffs destroyed both the Tate Family and America's piece of mind.

And the killers still try to get parole.....shocking.
